A cautionary tale:<\/p>\n
One of the perks “Email Players” subscribers get is, whenever I get\u00a0freelance copywriter opportunities sent to me, they’re the first to\u00a0know about them. And while most impress the wahoo out of these\u00a0clients and do elBenbo proud\u2026 there is one negative report I\u00a0sometimes get.<\/p>\n
Here’s what I mean:<\/p>\n
A would-be client sends me what they need.<\/p>\n
I email the “Email Players” list.<\/p>\n
The freelancers on there then email the would-be client, but some\u00a0of the people emailing them are coming off as trying to be too\u00a0clever (which turns them off) and, at worst, looking like spammers.<\/p>\n
Take, for example, my ex-copywriting apprentice.<\/p>\n
She recently started her own copywriting agency.<\/p>\n
And few months back, I sent an email to the Email Playerhood about\u00a0how she’s looking for copywriters to work with and she sent me some\u00a0of the replies asking:<\/p>\n
“Why can\u2019t they just talk to me like a regular person? Why all the\u00a0copywriting drama and shenanigans?”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I shook my head.<\/p>\n
And, had no answer.<\/p>\n
She was getting all these subject lines and emails that sounded\u00a0like spam at a glance, as they tried to show how clever they are.\u00a0These subject lines *would* have worked great if sent to a list,\u00a0most likely. But to someone who is requesting specific info?<\/p>\n
Nah-boo.<\/p>\n
They just want to know what you can do for them.<\/p>\n
My ex-copywriting apprentice even said in a few cases she wanted to\u00a0hear from the writers and liked them, but almost thought they were\u00a0spam because of the clever and cute subject lines.<\/p>\n
Anyway, like I said, a cautionary tale.<\/p>\n
It’s all about context and awareness with subject lines.<\/p>\n
(Just like with sales letter headlines.)<\/p>\n
