True story:<\/p>\n
A few years back the city of Seattle wanted to tax coffees to pay for child daycare and local opinion polls (i.e. \u201csurveys\u201d) showed a whopping 70% of people were for it.<\/p>\n
Oh, how all the coffee-drinking liberals loved the idea.<\/p>\n
Finally \u2014 a government who cares about the chilllllldren!<\/p>\n
Thus, everyone was for that tax.<\/p>\n
People were excited to support it.<\/p>\n
And, the voters were all geared up to pass it.<\/p>\n
Except, for one thing.<\/p>\n
The measure fell flat on its gluteus assimus.<\/p>\n
A full 68% rejected it.<\/p>\n
(The exact OPPOSITE of the poll data.)<\/p>\n
The point?<\/p>\n
People often say they want one thing, but then proceed to \u201cvote\u201d for the opposite (with their wallets, their feet, whatever).<\/p>\n
Anyway, there\u2019s a powerful marketing lesson here.<\/p>\n
And, that is:<\/p>\n
\u201cVotes trump polls\u201d<\/p>\n
This applies in politics and in business alike.<\/p>\n
