(maybe industries where VP&#8217;s and Directors tend to take themselves a little too serious \ud83d\ude42<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For some reason people think *their* market\/industry is different.<\/p>\n<p>I can assure you it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ALL the same at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re selling b2b, informational products, fiction, freelance services, commodities (like socks, for example), MLM, consumable products, or even if you\u2019re raising money to save the friggin\u2019 spotted owl.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all the same in direct marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t believe me?<\/p>\n<p>Well, maybe you\u2019ll believe a couple direct marketers much smarter than I am then:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Publicity Grand Puba Paul Hartunian teaches people to write outrageous headlines in their press releases \u2014 yes, even to \u201cstuffy\u201d reporters who think their crap doesn\u2019t stink and are super educated from major universities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am paraphrasing here.<\/p>\n<p>But, basically, what he said was, if you think CEOs or reporters aren\u2019t going home and watching Beavis &amp; Butthead every night you\u2019re fooling yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I have long profited from this fact.<\/p>\n<p>And, so have my more successful students.<\/p>\n<p>(We never put our markets on a pedestal)<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, you want to modulate your content to your market.<\/p>\n<p>But, don\u2019t think they aren\u2019t as batshiit crazy as you are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Dan Kennedy used to give a speech talking about his famous (and slightly nutty) Giorgio restaurant letters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ain\u2019t nuttin\u2019 \u201cprofessional\u201d about \u2018em.<\/p>\n<p>And (knowing the b2b objection was coming) he said right after telling it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cNow, a few people are saying, \u2018Now wait a minute. I sell very sophisticated stuff to very sophisticated people. I would never do anything like that. It\u2019s unprofessional.\u2019 Well, you can separate style from structure. I want you to know this works even in business to business then it does in consumer because everything else they get in business to business mail is dull, institutional and boring. But, if you like, you can separate style from structure.
