It was in front of 1,000 or so people from the MLM niche. And, they gave me around 50 minutes. But, because I thought giving hard content was what people wanted in a talk (hint: they don\u2019t, cries for \u201cVALUE!\u201d notwithstanding) I remember asking the guys organizing it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cDo you guys want me to cut my story out and maybe do more of the teaching?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Their answer:<\/p>\n<p>(Paraphrased, obviously)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cNo! Don&#8217;t do that. Tell your whole story. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s going to get people bonded to you. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s going to get people to realize you&#8217;re a real person and you&#8217;re not just up there lecturing them.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The point?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all just communication.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re talking about talking in front of a lot of people\u2026 writing an email to a list\u2026 creating a video\u2026 doing a podcast\u2026 selling on a webinar\u2026 or selling something face to face (or on the phone) \u2014 stories do the bulk of the persuasion.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>For one, they\u2019re natural entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>And, two, they build vision.<\/p>\n<p>And three, because I said so.<\/p>\n<p>(Do you really need any other reason than that?)<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, a lot of storytelling guru types complicate it to the point where people get paralyzed by the process \u2014 when it\u2019s something our brains naturally do (and naturally like receiving as info) as kids.<\/p>\n<p>When you were a kid at school did you need a 50-point storytelling checklist?<\/p>\n<p>Did you need to know the 7 kinds of plots (or however many there are)?<\/p>\n<p>Did you need to have the hero&#8217;s journey (whatever it&#8217;s called) explained to you?<\/p>\n<p>Did you need to attend a $900 seminar on storytelling?<\/p>\n<p>Were you tongue-tied when telling stories to your little friends?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018nuff said.<\/p>\n<p>If you still insist on needing help with using stories to sell, check out the bonus included with the July \u201cEmail Players\u201d issue which goes to the printer soon.
