One of my favorite business\/marketing lessons from the great Stan Lee (actually, his first boss, Martin Goodwin) was about the importance of realizing how much perception can affect your sales.<\/p>\n
For example:<\/p>\n
When Stan first started working in comics he was writing tons of titles.<\/p>\n
He cranked stories out like a machine.<\/p>\n
And, he was the only writer.<\/p>\n
Which was a problem.<\/p>\n
As he explained in his book \u201cExcelsior!\u201d:<\/p>\n
“Later, when I was writing a whole mess of stories in every issue, Martin decided it shouldn’t look as if Timely [Marvel Comics original name] could only afford one writer, so I adopted additional pen names.”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
A small thing?<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t think so at all.<\/p>\n
In fact, there\u2019s a lot of wisdom in it.<\/p>\n
It reminds me of Dan Kennedy\u2019s \u201cfull parking lot\u201d phenomenon \u2014 i.e. nobody wants to buy from a store or go to a doctor or hire a law firm, etc with an empty parking lot.<\/p>\n
Call it petty if you want.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s absolutely true.<\/p>\n
For better or worse, perception is extremely important.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s one reason I email my lists daily \u2014 relentlessly, and without pause, apology, or worry. The perception is, I have a lot more to say than my competition who aren\u2019t mailing daily, or who treat their lists like booty calls \u2014 only mailing when they have something to sell.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s so much opportoonity for people who are consistent.<\/p>\n
Who aren\u2019t lazy.<\/p>\n
And, who simply show up each day.<\/p>\n
The beauty of my email methodology is, you can arrange your day so you wake up, bang out a quick email, and be done with the day, if you want, while seeing your sales go up.<\/p>\n
