{"id":12826,"date":"2018-03-28T10:45:01","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T17:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=12826"},"modified":"2018-03-28T10:45:01","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T17:45:01","slug":"the-holy-spook-of-advertising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/the-holy-spook-of-advertising\/","title":{"rendered":"The Holy Spook Of Advertising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Currently, I\u2019m reading a biography about David Ogilvy called \u201cKing Of Madison Avenue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, it\u2019s quite the fascinating read.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite parts is when it talks about how Ogilvy (an atheist) was a big fan of how the Catholic Church is structured, and how he based his ad agency&#8217;s structure on a lot of the same principles the church uses.<\/p>\n<p>(Even going so far as to call himself \u201cThe Holy Spook\u201d.)<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that stood out:<\/p>\n<p>Ogilvy was one of the best trolls in the advertising business.<\/p>\n<p>This guy trolled everyone.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d troll friends, family, employees, clients (telling them things like \u201cdon\u2019t buy a dog if you\u2019re just going to bark yourself\u201d or \u201cif you want monkeys, pay peanuts\u201d), his spouses (one time he knew his wife had been busting her butt all day cooking for him, just for him to fix himself a bowl of grape nuts cereal instead of eating the meal\u2026), and even himself.<\/p>\n<p>More:<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if he used trolling in his advertising.<\/p>\n<p>But, I wonder if he were alive now, especially with social media and memes, if he wouldn\u2019t use trolling in his advertising to the hilt. Especially since one of the big principles he lived by was to always tell the truth in advertising, but make sure you always make the truth interesting.<\/p>\n<p>And few things can make the truth more interesting than trolling.<\/p>\n<p>That is, if done right.<\/p>\n<p>(Hardly anyone does it right, if at all, in their emails or other ads.)<\/p>\n<p>Enter the April \u201cEmail Players\u201d issue.<\/p>\n<p>Much of it is showing examples (easily modeled \u2014 not copied and pasted \u2014 or used as inspiration with a little thinking and application) of profitable trolling via different advertising media (i.e. sales letter, email, press release, facebook, twitter, etc).<\/p>\n<p>This issue goes to the printer in a few short days.<\/p>\n<p>To get it, you have to be subscribed before I send it to the printer.<\/p>\n<p>After that, too late.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the link:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.EmailPlayers.com\"><strong>www.EmailPlayers.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Currently, I\u2019m reading a biography about David Ogilvy called \u201cKing Of Madison Avenue.\u201d And, it\u2019s quite the fascinating read.
