{"id":145,"date":"2008-08-05T22:33:06","date_gmt":"2008-08-05T22:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/beat-the-spam-filters-with-spam\/"},"modified":"2008-08-05T22:33:06","modified_gmt":"2008-08-05T22:33:06","slug":"beat-the-spam-filters-with-spam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/beat-the-spam-filters-with-spam\/","title":{"rendered":"Beat The Spam Filters&#8230; With Spam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, this is probably a tad controversial.<\/p>\n<p>So let me begin by saying I am <em>against<\/em> spam.<\/p>\n<p>I hate it as much as anyone.<\/p>\n<p>And it sucks how spammers ruin it for us legitimate emailers.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, because of these idiot spammers I may have to change my email address.<\/p>\n<p>BUT&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; at the same time, it can&#8217;t hurt to observe how spammers get their trash emails through while our legitimate emails are often banished into the Internet &#8220;nether-world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which is why, despite numerous pleas from my sanity and conscience, I&#8217;ve started doing the unthinkable:<\/p>\n<p>Actually <em>reading<\/em> my spam email.<\/p>\n<p>And although most of it is bizarre (and <em>creepy<\/em>), I did notice something useful for us legitimate marketers:<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes obvious &#8220;red flag&#8221; words get through because the spammers are taking the offending word and joining it with the next word.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Make Money With Copywriting&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;MakeMoney With Copywriting&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or, instead of:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Click Here Now!&#8221;<\/strong> (A HUGE spam filter red flag)<\/p>\n<p>They might say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;ClickHere Now&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, to be honest, I haven&#8217;t done a whole lot of testing with this other than to run some of these phrases through spam assassin.<\/p>\n<p>And usually it doesn&#8217;t recognize them. (At least not yet.
