{"id":1501,"date":"2009-02-06T21:58:17","date_gmt":"2009-02-06T21:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=1501"},"modified":"2009-02-06T21:58:17","modified_gmt":"2009-02-06T21:58:17","slug":"brilliant-copywriting-wont-sell-a-turd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/brilliant-copywriting-wont-sell-a-turd\/","title":{"rendered":"Brilliant Copywriting Won&#8217;t Sell A Turd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Got an interesting story for you today.<\/p>\n<p>A story that perfectly illustrates a nasty mistake almost everyone makes (or will make) at least once.<\/p>\n<p>And believe it or not, the better your copywriting is&#8230; the <strong>MORE<\/strong> likely you are to make it.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s what happened:<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a friend of mine was frustrated because her ad copy wasn&#8217;t converting.<\/p>\n<p>And the irony was, her entire ad &#8212; from top to bottom &#8212; was a persuasion <em>masterpiece<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her headline instantly grabbed attention.  <\/p>\n<p>Her lead and hook were superbly crafted.  <\/p>\n<p>The story behind her product was absolutely fascinating.  (It was almost like reading a can&#8217;t-put-it-down novel in some ways.)  <\/p>\n<p>And everything else just shined and compelled readership:  <\/p>\n<p>Her bullets, close, P.S., even her order form copy.<\/p>\n<p>All were &#8220;A+&#8221; start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>However, nobody (not one person) bought her product despite all this brilliant copy.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t get why this isn&#8217;t converting,&#8221;<\/em> she said.  <em>&#8220;I did everything I was supposed to!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in a way she was right.<\/p>\n<p>Everything was &#8220;functionally&#8221; correct and in the right places.<\/p>\n<p>However, her real &#8220;problem&#8221; was not in the writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It was selling a product nobody wanted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frankly, you could have locked all the world&#8217;s greatest copywriters in a room for 6 months to work on her ad and it STILL would not have converted.<\/p>\n<p>When I interviewed master marketer Doberman Dan Gallapoo for my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CopywritingGrabBag.com\">Copywriting Grab Bag book<\/a><\/strong>, he so &#8220;eloquently&#8221; put it like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Brilliant Copywriting Will Not Sell A Turd&#8221;<\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words&#8230; your copy &#8212; your &#8220;sales pitch&#8221; &#8212; is worthless if nobody first <em>wants<\/em> what your product does.<\/p>\n<p>Without that &#8220;starving crowd&#8221; (as the late, brilliant copywriter Gary Halbert called it), nothing else <em>counts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Those fancy-shmancy sales tricks and &#8220;choke holds&#8221; taught in all the copywriting books and courses will have no effect.<\/p>\n<p>And even the most compelling sales messages die on the vine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the #1 reason most ads crash and burn. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If nobody wants your product in the first place, you&#8217;re dead in the water no matter how &#8220;good&#8221; your advertising is.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, important &#8220;safety tip&#8221; for anyone selling anything.<\/p>\n<p>Could save you a lot of time, moolah and frustration.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S<\/strong>.<em>The Copywriting Grab Bag<\/em> product is almost ready.
