I was asked about spam recently on Twitter.<\/p>\n
And, specifically, what\u2019s the best way to get spam complaints down.<\/p>\n
My first answer (short) is basically this:<\/p>\n
Take a swipe out of the ol’ Chicago Democrats’ playbook:<\/p>\n
Email early and email often.<\/p>\n
Besides that:<\/p>\n
1. Bite the bullet \u2014 and pay to have your email list scrubbed<\/p>\n
2. Write emails correct \u2014 the kind people want to read, click, buy from.<\/p>\n
3. Follow CanSpam rules \u2014 they are surprisingly useful for building, growing, maintaining relationships via email. (That is not why they were written by a bunch of bureaucrats, but that has been the effect in my business over the years, I see no reason that can\u2019t be anyone else\u2019s experience)<\/p>\n
4. Sell the relationship not the click \u2014 do the former & the latter is more likely to happen in my experience<\/p>\n
5. Mail daily \u2014 not monthly, not weekly, no just when you have something to launch<\/p>\n
Why on this last one?<\/p>\n
Because, also in my experience, many if not most people push spam due to legitimately not knowing who you are from not hearing from you \u2014 and they\u2019ll be far more likely to use the regular opt-out button instead.<\/p>\n
Plus, doing so forces opt-ins to go hot or cold, while turning off the lukewarm.<\/p>\n
Lukewarm leads push spam.<\/p>\n
Hot leads stick around.<\/p>\n
Cold opt-out \u2014 usually peacefully.<\/p>\n
