{"id":1554,"date":"2009-02-17T17:07:39","date_gmt":"2009-02-17T17:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=1554"},"modified":"2009-02-17T17:07:39","modified_gmt":"2009-02-17T17:07:39","slug":"snot-nose-copywriting-secrets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/snot-nose-copywriting-secrets\/","title":{"rendered":"Snot-Nose Copywriting Secrets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before I was a snot-nose copywriter who collects <em>ads<\/em>&#8230; I was a snot-nose geek who collected <em>comic books<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lots and lots and LOTS of comic books.<\/p>\n<p>Comics that contain some truly WORLD CLASS ads.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read old comic book ads you know of what I speaketh.<\/p>\n<p>Even the dinky classifieds give today&#8217;s top copywriters a run for their money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They just <em>seeped<\/em> right into your brain and psychology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And sold everything from crystal balls&#8230; to exercise lessons&#8230; to muney-making opportoonities&#8230; to info products promising you how to draw, play the guitar, and everything else you can can think of.<\/p>\n<p>All so cheap you could buy &#8217;em without denting your allowance \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re talking true copywriting masterpieces that did more selling in 3 lines than today&#8217;s big Internet ads do in 30 PAGES. (It&#8217;s true &#8212; reading old comic ads is <em>humbling<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>The old Charles Atlas ads were my favorites.<\/p>\n<p>All us skinny, pimple-popping pre-teens could relate to the dude getting sand kicked in his face in front of his girl.<\/p>\n<p>Or the scrawny, &#8220;gollum-like&#8221; geek in the &#8220;before &#038; after&#8221; photos.<\/p>\n<p>Or the oh-so tempting promise to get studly simply by flexing our muscles a certain way 30 seconds per day.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, why am I telling you this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because with today&#8217;s ever-tightening attention spans&#8230; being pithy is more important than ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And you can&#8217;t get pithier than old comic book ads.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, they are pretty easy to find.<\/p>\n<p>You can find them in older (pre-1990) comic books.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a <em>goldmine<\/em> of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.BenSettle.com\/ebay\/atlas\">Charles Atlas ads<\/a><\/strong> dirt-cheap on Ebay:  <\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.BenSettle.com\/ebay\/atlas\">www.BenSettle.com\/ebay\/atlas<\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I also link to a bunch of cool comic ad sites in my free swipe file report &#8212; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.BenSettle.com\/blog\/free-swipe-file\">www.BenSettle.com\/blog\/free-swipe-file<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; as well.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, if you want to write ads that make more moolah, study old comic book ads.<\/p>\n<p>They are some of the best &#8220;pithy copy&#8221; teachers you&#8217;ll ever see.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.<\/strong> A few years ago, I went and scanned all the best comic book ads I could find in my mom&#8217;s attic.
