{"id":1557,"date":"2009-02-19T16:59:04","date_gmt":"2009-02-19T16:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=1557"},"modified":"2009-02-19T16:59:04","modified_gmt":"2009-02-19T16:59:04","slug":"kicking-your-own-butt-in-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/kicking-your-own-butt-in-sales\/","title":{"rendered":"Kicking Your Own Butt In Sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I gotta admit &#8212; one of my favorite &#8220;reality&#8221; shows is <em>Tapout<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t usually watch reality shows.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I think most are pretty stoopid. <\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m a BIG <em>Tapout<\/em> fan.<\/p>\n<p>The show is about three dudes who travel the country, constantly looking for up-and-coming mixed martial arts fighters to sponsor and wear their clothes.<\/p>\n<p>And it contains lots of cool &#8220;real-world&#8221; lessons on what it takes to win, succeed and dominate not only in professional fighting &#8212; but in all life.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I can&#8217;t get enough of the adventures (and misadventures) of Punkass, Skyscrape and Mask. (The three amigos who star in the show).<\/p>\n<p>And if you are into martial arts or UFC or anything that has anything to do with guys trying to kick the crap out of each other&#8230; you will probably love this show, too.<\/p>\n<p>So what does this have to do with your sales and marketing?<\/p>\n<p>Why should you care?<\/p>\n<p>Because during the last show I watched, I couldn&#8217;t help but see all the ways <em>martial arts<\/em> relates to <em>business<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Especially <em>selling<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See, I think learning sales is a LOT like learning martial arts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, in some martial arts (not all), they teach you to fall before teaching you how to fight.  <\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s not a bad idea in sales, too &#8212; i.e. learning what NOT to do, first.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the more common sales &#8220;blunders&#8221; many of us make at one time or another (I know I have!).<\/p>\n<p>Just making sure you DON&#8217;T do these can go a <em>long<\/em> way towards ratcheting up your sales:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.  Being boring <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2.  Refusing to offend anyone <\/p>\n<p><strong>3.  Relying on &#8220;tricks&#8221; and &#8220;tactics&#8221; instead of strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4.  Not respecting your prospect <\/p>\n<p><strong>5.  Bragging <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6.  Trying to create demand&#8230; instead of VISION<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.  &#8220;Convincing&#8221; instead of persuading <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can go into more detail about each of these in the future.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, if you&#8217;re committing any of these selling mistakes &#8212; STOP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because you&#8217;re basically like a fighter kicking is own butt:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if your &#8220;technique&#8221; is good, you still <em>hurt<\/em> yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CopywritingGrabBag.com\">The Copywriting Grab Bag discount list<\/a><\/strong> comes down today.  <\/p>\n<p>In fact, I&#8217;ll probably remove the sign-up form within the next hour or so.
