{"id":1702,"date":"2009-04-02T15:30:23","date_gmt":"2009-04-02T15:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2009-04-02T15:30:23","modified_gmt":"2009-04-02T15:30:23","slug":"un-sexy-internet-marketing-tip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/un-sexy-internet-marketing-tip\/","title":{"rendered":"Un-Sexy Internet Marketing Tip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What I&#8217;m gonna say might sound strange, silly, maybe even <em>crazy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But if you market online, it could make a BIG difference in your bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Listen:<\/p>\n<p>One of the coolest lessons in my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CopywritingGrabBag.com\">copywriting book<\/a><\/strong> is about something many of us find rather&#8230; <\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230; unsexy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know I did until I learned it.<\/p>\n<p>And very few people are teaching this online.<\/p>\n<p>But in Appendix 2, I interviewed <strong>Doberman Dan Gallapoo<\/strong> &#8212; an extremely savvy marketer who worked side-by-side with the late (great) copywriting &#038; marketing genius <strong>Gary Halbert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>DD learned many cool tips and secrets from Gary.<\/p>\n<p>One of which made an <em>exceptionally<\/em> big difference in his bottom line, but that he had to learn the &#8220;hard way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what happened:<\/p>\n<p>It was Christmas many years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Sales were low, and Doberman Dan was down to his last &#8220;bullet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, sales were so bad, he literally wondered how he was going to put <em>food<\/em> on the table.<\/p>\n<p>True, he had a big email list for his supplement business.<\/p>\n<p>But the response was extremely weak for whatever reason. <\/p>\n<p>So there he was &#8212; with the <em>wolves<\/em> howling at the door &#8212; wondering what to do, when he remembered something Sir Gary of Halbert taught him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Something that&#8217;s FAR from &#8220;sexy&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Something that, frankly, DD did <em>not<\/em> want to do.  <\/p>\n<p>But since his back was to the wall, he figured he had no choice.<\/p>\n<p>So he went into his files and pulled the names of his most recent 1,000 buyers.<\/p>\n<p>But he did not pull their email addresses.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled their <strong>SNAIL MAIL<\/strong> addresses.  <\/p>\n<p>You remember snail mail, right?  <\/p>\n<p>I had almost forgotten about it myself until DD told me his story.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, so he cranked out a sales letter, sat at his kitchen table and started hand addressing envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>Then, with his last bit of money, he had them printed and mailed.<\/p>\n<p>What happened?<\/p>\n<p>Would you believe a &#8220;Christmas Miracle&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Hey, it happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because just by snail mailing his 1,000 most recent customers, he got FLOODED with orders.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>He was just blown away.<\/p>\n<p>So he did it again the next month.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the orders <em>poured<\/em> in.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, the moolah came so fast, he broke out his calculator and did some figurin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Lo and behold&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Doberman Dan discovered if he&#8217;d been snail mailing his most recent customers for the past several years, he would&#8217;ve made an extra $100k per <strong>YEAR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And that was a <em>conservative<\/em> estimate.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s the point:<\/p>\n<p>If you have a lot of customers and are only using email, you could be leaving a <em>ton<\/em> of moolah on the table.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m dabbling with snail mail myself and in future emails I&#8217;ll let you know how it goes.<\/p>\n<p>I once heard Dan Kennedy say (paraphrased): <em>&#8220;The best thing that&#8217;s happened to email is direct mail.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With these snail-mailer numbers, that&#8217;s pretty hard to dispute.<\/p>\n<p>And by the way, speaking of offline marketing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a comment from a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CopywritingGrabBag.com\">pro copywriter about another appendix<\/a><\/strong> in <strong>The Copywriting Grab Bag<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>Ben,<\/p>\n<p>Mike Winicki&#8217;s interview ALONE was worth the book price. <\/p>\n<p>Few people understand the power of offline media&#8230; fewer know how to use it&#8230; let alone give away all those RESOURCES in that interview. <\/p>\n<p>Until I read that interview I was on this wavelength:  Yeah, I understand offline is powerful&#8230; but HOW do you actually use it step-by-step?<\/p>\n<p>After I read that interview, light bulbs lit up&#8230; OH&#8230;. THAT&#8217;S where you find celebrities and cheap media buys.  I wrote to Mike after I read that interview. I HAD to say thank you for all that value.<\/p>\n<p>-Colin Y.J.
