{"id":18588,"date":"2026-02-24T12:36:32","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T12:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=18588"},"modified":"2026-02-24T12:36:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T12:36:32","slug":"nobody-knows-anything-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/nobody-knows-anything-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobody knows anything again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cnobody knows anything\u201d might be the most consistently accurate lines in business.<\/p>\n<p>Not just in Hollywood but also direct marketing or any other industry.<\/p>\n<p>The best example of this is probably George Lucas and Star Wars:<\/p>\n<p>* It was rejected by every major Hollywood studio except 20th Century Fox<\/p>\n<p>* Execs called it &#8220;a space opera for children&#8221; and though it too weird<\/p>\n<p>* Plus, sci-fi was \u201cout\u201d in the 70\u2019s and everyone assumed nobody would care about sci-fi movies in those days at that time<\/p>\n<p>* He showed a cut to his filmmaker friends and everyone except Steven Spielberg (who loved it), thought it sucked &#8211; in fact, Brian DePalma said it was, \u201cthe worst movie ever\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Even Lucas thought it\u2019d fail and went on a long vacation when it released, assuming he\u2019d come back to a miserable failure<\/p>\n<p>* The actors literally made fun of of it, not just Harrison Ford and Alec Guinness, but even usually go-lucky and happy Mark Hamill, none of them thought it\u2019d be successful or be taken seriously<\/p>\n<p>* Turned out everyone except Spielberg was wrong, it became such a big hit, so quickly, that soon a Hollywood executive was forced to admit they were no longer in the Hollywood business, they were in the George Lucas business<\/p>\n<p>i.e., Nobody knows anything.<\/p>\n<p>That idea you have that your Facebook friends say is bad, nobody will care, nobody will buy, etc?<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>There were even several friends of mine who shalt NOT be named to protect the guilty&#8230; who said my Email Players newsletter (now on its 15th year of continuous publication) would not work, was a disconnect (since it is print, not delivered via email), yada yada yada.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p>Even then I knew nobody knew anything.<\/p>\n<p>And the reason I knew nobody knew anything was because even at that point, I\u2019d had many enormously successful clients who\u2019d fight me tooth &amp; nail on ad ideas, themes, headlines, stories, offers&#8230; where sometimes I\u2019d spend MORE time writing emails to convince them to run my ad than it took to write the dayem ad itself&#8230; only for them to finally run it and admit \u201cgee, I guess he was right&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So nobody knows anything.<\/p>\n<p>* Your clients don\u2019t know anything.<\/p>\n<p>* Your idiot Facebook friends definitely don\u2019t know anything.<\/p>\n<p>* Your anon Twitter followers know even less.<\/p>\n<p>* Your coach, your mentor, your mastermind peers also don\u2019t know jack shyte.<\/p>\n<p>* And no, I don\u2019t know anything either, and neither do you&#8230; until you run with your ideas.<\/p>\n<p>But you know who DOES know?<\/p>\n<p>Your market.<\/p>\n<p>But even they don\u2019t know until you put what you got in front of them.
