{"id":3124,"date":"2010-03-16T08:00:06","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T15:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=3124"},"modified":"2010-03-16T08:00:06","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T15:00:06","slug":"why-i-dont-do-discounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/why-i-dont-do-discounts\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I Don&#8217;t Do Discounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes people ask me for a discount.<\/p>\n<p>Usually for <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.CopywritingGrabBag.com\" rel=\"noopener\">The Copywriting Grab Bag<\/a><\/strong> or<strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.CrackerjackSelling.com\" rel=\"noopener\">Crackerjack Selling Secrets<\/a><\/strong> or even on my <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bensettle.com\/services\" rel=\"noopener\">direct response copywriting services<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly don&#8217;t blame anyone for asking.<\/p>\n<p>My stuff is usually a bit on the &#8220;pricey&#8221; side.  <\/p>\n<p>And my copywriting fees (while I could easily charge much more) are nothing to sneeze at for most people, either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still, nowadays I always shoot these requests down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First, it&#8217;s not fair to those who DID pay full price.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason is value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most people do not <em>value<\/em> discounted products<\/strong>.  In fact, when I made exceptions in the past, I almost always <em>regretted<\/em> it.  Usually, the customer turned out to be a pain the rumperoo. Or (even worse) they never did anything with the info.<\/p>\n<p>And you want to know something?<\/p>\n<p>Both are unlikely to happen when it kinda &#8220;hurts&#8221; to buy. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll use myself as an example.<\/p>\n<p>A couple years ago when I bought Gary Bencivega&#8217;s &#8220;Farewell&#8221; seminar DVD&#8217;s, I had trouble coming up with the $5k cash to pay for it.  I mean, it <em>stung<\/em> writing that check. (Gary did not allow credit card orders, so you felt it&#8230; and you felt it immediately.)<\/p>\n<p>But guess what?<\/p>\n<p>Even today I <em>cherish<\/em> that product above all others.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve listened to it some 20 times now, and will KEEP going through it at least twice per year for the foreseeable future.  I can even directly trace a BIG chunk of my income to that course (it changed everything for me), and it has paid for itself in spades.<\/p>\n<p>Would that have happened if it was discounted?<\/p>\n<p>Probably not.<\/p>\n<p>Most likely I would have watched it a couple times&#8230; <em>max<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So many products, so little time, you know?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, that&#8217;s why I don&#8217;t do discounts.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just for my benefit&#8230; but yours, too.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.<\/strong> I also do not recommend buying my products (or ANY info product, for that matter) if it puts you under a lot of financial strain.
