{"id":3353,"date":"2010-05-20T08:00:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T15:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=3353"},"modified":"2010-05-20T08:00:56","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T15:00:56","slug":"killer-catfish-bait-copywriters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/killer-catfish-bait-copywriters\/","title":{"rendered":"Killer Catfish Bait Copywriters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever talk to a catfish bait copywriter?<\/p>\n<p>These are copywriters (usually newbies who know just enough to be <em>dangerous<\/em> to themselves) who have taken a course or read a book and all the sudden think they&#8217;re &#8220;the man.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They use LOTS of attitude.<\/p>\n<p>And they love doling out the &#8220;tough talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Usually, they are copying their favorite goo-roo&#8217;s words, phrases, attitude, tonality, etc. (People who can actually back up their bragging).  <\/p>\n<p>And as a result, they end up being like catfish bait:<\/p>\n<p>They &#8220;smell&#8221; good to all the bottom feeders and scavengers who think it&#8217;s &#8220;cool&#8221; (but who have no resources to hire them)&#8230; but <em>stink<\/em> to high heaven to everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>I feel kind of bad for them, actually.<\/p>\n<p>They usually MEAN well.<\/p>\n<p>But they&#8217;re sabotaging themselves.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s some advice for catfish bait copywriters reading this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.  Drop The Attitude<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t back up your mouth with results yet, don&#8217;t <em>fake<\/em> like you have any results.  People can smell catfish bait a mile away &#8212; especially in today&#8217;s skeptical market place. <\/p>\n<p><strong>2.  Be Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not a grainy xerox of someone else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.  Be Likeable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead of acting like the obnoxious wannabe everyone feels the urge to slap upside the head&#8230; tone down the tough talk and be a human being.  <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not hard when you give it a try.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.  Finally&#8230; Realize It&#8217;s NOT About You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or your &#8220;killer keyboard&#8221; or whatever.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about serving people, understanding their pain, and demonstrating you&#8217;re the one to get the job done (and not a tough guy Fonzi personality or whatever).<\/p>\n<p>Hey, it&#8217;s not rocket science. <\/p>\n<p>(I know&#8230; I used to <strong>BE<\/strong> a catfish bait copywriter once.)<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s very important and not always clear if you&#8217;ve never done deep market research before.
