In fact, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s truly possible to get really good at selling online until you&#8217;ve made a lot of mistakes selling offline.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example, my MLM days.<\/p>\n<p>I was a really excited distributor!<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, baby!<\/p>\n<p>I was sold on all the products&#8230; thoroughly indoctrinated with the company propaganda&#8230; and could recite the tapes and company &#8220;kool aid&#8221; chapter by chapter and verse by verse.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, I BOMBED selling.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, even though I had the enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I had the product knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>And even though I was a persistent little cuss.<\/p>\n<p>You see, my problem was my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I never shut up!<\/p>\n<p>I just blabbed on and on and on and on.  Sometimes someone might even have been ready to sign up, credit card in hand, and I&#8217;d end up talking them out of it!<\/p>\n<p>I just wouldn&#8217;t shut the &#038;$^%! up!<\/p>\n<p>Man times I could literally see the enthusiasm (and life) drain from some poor guy&#8217;s face with my every word.  <\/p>\n<p>Then&#8230; fast forward a couple years later.<\/p>\n<p>I started selling online via writing sales letters.<\/p>\n<p>I figured that&#8217;d take care of my &#8220;chatter box&#8221; problem.<\/p>\n<p>BZZZT!<\/p>\n<p>That only made it WORSE.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of not shutting up and getting to the point verbally&#8230; I was being too long winded with my written words.<\/p>\n<p>Ugh.<\/p>\n<p>I still shutter at those 25+ page monstrosities.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, my point is this:<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be better at selling (online or off)&#8230; shut up!  <\/p>\n<p>Be a man (or lady) of as few words as you need to get the job done.<\/p>\n<p>Anything more just sabotages yourself.<\/p>\n<p>And puts your would-be customers to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.<\/strong> Probably the worst place you can be too chatty in your ads is in the close.
