{"id":4193,"date":"2011-03-17T04:00:06","date_gmt":"2011-03-17T11:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=4193"},"modified":"2011-03-17T04:00:06","modified_gmt":"2011-03-17T11:00:06","slug":"redonkulous-copywriting-myths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/redonkulous-copywriting-myths\/","title":{"rendered":"Redonkulous Copywriting Myths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8216;net is stuffed with copywriting myths.<\/p>\n<p>Too many to list, quite sadly.<\/p>\n<p>And before you spend a small fortune on learning it, I think you will find the following little &#8220;guide&#8221; helpful (I wish I&#8217;d known this several years ago when I was trying to sift out the good stuff from the garbage).<\/p>\n<p>OK, ready?<\/p>\n<p>Here goes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #1<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Copywriting is a sales generator&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No&#8230; it&#8217;s a sales multiplier.<\/p>\n<p>By itself, an ad is worthless. You need some other things first, like, oh, I dunno&#8230; a list&#8230; a great product&#8230; some marketplace positioning&#8230; etc<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Copywriting can you a million overnight&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Uhm&#8230; no it won&#8217;t. Unless, of course you have the above first in SPADES&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Expensive is always better&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It amazes me how cleverly packaged some goo-roo courses are. You could get the same information in a $12 book they charge $1,200.00 for&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #4:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You get what you pay for&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You probably don&#8217;t need me to tell you that&#8217;s redonkulous. There are libraries full of $1,000 copywriting courses owned by people who still can&#8217;t write an ad&#8230; because they never took the time to implement the products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #5:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Learning copywriting will help me get clients!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not so fast, Batman.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of copywriting courses mention nothing about getting clients. The reason why is because many aren&#8217;t written by people who even know how to get clients themselves!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH #6:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Learning copywriting will help my email writing&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I wasted a lot of years thinking regular emails were like static sales pages and direct mail letters, and assuming the stuff I was learning in copywriting courses were applicable to emails.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they are&#8230; but often, they aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Now&#8230; re: Myths 5 &amp; 6 above:<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a blatantly self-serving reason for including those.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m re-releasing my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.copywritinggrabbag.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copywriting Grab Bag<\/a><\/strong> product soon.
