{"id":6143,"date":"2012-08-14T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T13:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=6143"},"modified":"2012-08-14T06:00:41","modified_gmt":"2012-08-14T13:00:41","slug":"forbidden-email-secrets-your-mama-wouldnt-approve-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/forbidden-email-secrets-your-mama-wouldnt-approve-of\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Forbidden&#8221; Email Secrets Your Mama Wouldn&#8217;t Approve Of"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I saw an ad with an amusing headline.<\/p>\n<p>It was from some marketing or copywriting goo-roo (forget which one) and was promising to show people how to use so-called &#8220;forbidden&#8221; persuasion secrets to sell more products or services.<\/p>\n<p>Forbidden, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Really?<\/p>\n<p>Because I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;d brag about that.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, think about it.<\/p>\n<p>The only way that description of a persuasion tactic makes sense is if the product teaches people to defraud customers or break the law.<\/p>\n<p>Then maybe it&#8217;d make sense.<\/p>\n<p>After all, there&#8217;s nothing &#8220;forbidden&#8221; about legitimate sales.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing &#8220;dark artsy&#8221; about it, either.<\/p>\n<p>Not if you do it right, at least.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In fact, real selling is the exact opposite:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Totally <em>transparent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Brutally <em>honest<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, completely <em>ethical<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I know!<\/p>\n<p>But using terms like &#8220;forbidden&#8221; sounds sooooo coolio, right?<\/p>\n<p>Hey, do what you want.<\/p>\n<p>But just realize this:<\/p>\n<p>The best customers balk at that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>(In MOST markets, at least, there are exceptions&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>So SPURN me at your peril.<\/p>\n<p>Before taking off, one more thing:<\/p>\n<p>The September &#8220;Email Players&#8221; issue could get me in a bit &#8216;o trouble. No, there&#8217;s nothing &#8220;forbidden&#8221; inside.
