Recently, there was an article comparing Ann Romney’s and Michelle Obama’s convention speeches. And what it said was, the First Lady’s speech was written at a 12th grade level while Ann Romney’s speech was at a 5th grade level. Apparently, “sophisticated” Michelle’s was the highest in history by a presidential nominee’s wife, while “redneck” Ann’s was the lowest of any presidential nominee’s wife.<\/p>\n
Now, I have no dog in this fight.<\/p>\n
I’m not voting for Obama or Romney.<\/p>\n
Probably, I will write in Walter White\/Heisenberg.<\/strong><\/p>\n Or, maybe Loki.<\/p>\n Not sure yet (yes, I’m one of the undecided voters).<\/p>\n Anyway, back to the salt mines:<\/p>\n This article had Obama fanboys cheering.<\/p>\n Which I find kinda funny.<\/p>\n Because if anything, while the First Lady’s speechwriter may have had a good grasp of big words, he\/she (whoever it is) obviously doesn’t know a thing about persuasion.<\/p>\n In fact, my professional analysis is this:<\/p>\n Michelle’s speech was written for applause<\/em>.<\/p>\n Anne’s was written for votes<\/em>.<\/p>\n And let’s face it:<\/p>\n If votes<\/em> is the goal, then Michelle’s speech was a big #fail.<\/strong><\/p>\n The fact Michelle signed off on her speech shows that, while she may be “intelligent” by academic standards (I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt), she’s pretty clueless when it comes to persuasion.<\/p>\n Hey, it’s no different writing emails.<\/p>\n The best emails are mostly “street-level.”<\/p>\n With poor syntax (whatever that word means).<\/p>\n Butchered grammar.<\/p>\n And, yes, even a mispeled (ha) word or two.<\/p>\n More:<\/p>\n Let’s look at Ann’s speech for a second.<\/p>\n I’m not going to reprint it here.<\/p>\n (You can easily Google it).<\/p>\n But from what I’ve seen, it was craftily written.<\/p>\n (Despite all the “Mitt is gonna save you” BS.)<\/p>\n It has lots of repetition (like Winston Churchhill speeches).<\/p>\n Easily understood words.<\/p>\n And, plenty of short, quickly “digested” sentences.<\/p>\n Anyway, I’ve done enough damage today.<\/p>\n So let’s wrap up:<\/p>\n Each month I get deep into how to write persuasive emails in the “Email Players” newsletter.
