After last week’s email about why I think many<\/em> (not all, and common sense must prevail…) entrepreneurs would do well to be more “anti-professional”, I got a slew of questions on the subject. Some thought I’m saying to be an insulting asshole to everyone (the copywriting fanboys seemed especially taken with that idea for some reason…)<\/p>\n No!<\/p>\n Easy there my eager little whipper-snappers.<\/p>\n I said anti-professional.<\/strong><\/p>\n Not unprofessional.<\/p>\n And, certainly not outright asshole.<\/p>\n Lemme give you an example…<\/p>\n Let’s say you get some mindless and completely pointless complaint email about an email you send your list that says… “THIS WAS A WASTE OF TIME, I DON’T WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU ANYMORE, TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST!!!!”<\/p>\n Yes, in all CAPS.<\/p>\n You know the type.<\/p>\n (And it’s a sign you’re doing something *right*, by the way).<\/p>\n There are 3 ways to address this:<\/p>\n 1. The professional<\/em> way The professional way is like you’d get from a big eCommerce company:<\/p>\n “I’m sorry, I will remove you immediately, have a great day.”<\/p>\n That isn’t terrible.<\/p>\n But, it doesn’t really do the world much good.<\/p>\n After all, the complainer has just had his brain’s whiney little complainer hamster fed and watered and feeling empowered to continue his wicked deeds (misery really does love company…)<\/p>\n Then, there’s the unprofessional’s response.<\/p>\n He does the exact opposite — telling the complainer he’s a loser while insulting (even threatening him with physical violence like “I’ll kick your ass I ever meet you in person…” etc).<\/p>\n Finally, there’s the anti-professional’s response:<\/p>\n No butt smooching.<\/p>\n No arguing.<\/p>\n And, no drama of any kind.<\/p>\n Just…<\/p>\n Radio silence!<\/strong><\/p>\n Or, if it’s a particularly nasty complainer, you might say what I recently told a guy who didn’t like one of my emails and yelled at me in all CAPS:<\/p>\n “Do you always whine like a little bitch\u00a0instead of just clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ link”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n But, I wouldn’t recommend YOU doing this, necessarily.<\/p>\n I’ve been at this a while and my haters have a certain predictability<\/em>.<\/p>\n So I suggest you use “radio silence.”<\/p>\n Anyway, that’s that.<\/p>\n Writing like an anti-professional is what I teach in “Email Players”.<\/p>\n All my emails are in this style.<\/p>\n And, I find it highly effective.<\/p>\n (As have others.)<\/p>\n Go here to subscribe:<\/p>\n
