{"id":7063,"date":"2013-04-16T06:00:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T13:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=7063"},"modified":"2013-04-16T06:00:32","modified_gmt":"2013-04-16T13:00:32","slug":"advertising-critic-pronounces-me-screwed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/advertising-critic-pronounces-me-screwed\/","title":{"rendered":"Advertising Critic Pronounces Me &#8220;Screwed&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Never a dull moment &#8217;round here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I was forwarded a Facebook group message where some dude critiqued my email &#8220;sequence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, he recently got on my list.<\/p>\n<p>Read a grand total of two emails.<\/p>\n<p>(He mentioned my &#8220;welcome&#8221; email and lawyer email.)<\/p>\n<p>And from those two emails pronounced I&#8217;m doing everything wrong, have no credibility and am &#8220;screwing myself&#8221; by not giving away lots of videos, content and reports. In fact, he was particularly hung up on lack of content and &#8220;proof&#8221;, and lamented how I did not build any &#8220;rapport&#8221; with him, show any desire to help him, or give him any reason to trust me.<\/p>\n<p>Is he right?<\/p>\n<p>Am I doing it all wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should I renounce my wicked ways?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Uhm, no.<\/p>\n<p>Just the opposite, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, right off the bat he was confused:<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t even have an email &#8220;sequence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only the &#8220;welcome&#8221; email is auto-respondered.<\/p>\n<p>And that has a pdf of the first &#8220;Email Players&#8221; issue.<\/p>\n<p>Pure content.<\/p>\n<p>And, <em>valuable<\/em> content, too.<\/p>\n<p>Same with his lame &#8220;proof&#8221; complaint.<\/p>\n<p>I use 13+ ways to prove claims or build my credibility in my emails (and 2 of them I use in almost every email I send out, including THIS email). I&#8217;ll probably do an &#8220;Email Players&#8221; issue about this eventually.<\/p>\n<p>But, they&#8217;re &#8220;invisible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s kinda the point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m not trying to impress &#8220;advertising critics.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to sell my product.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of which&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, of course I&#8217;m always selling.<\/p>\n<p>After all, I *believe* in my products.<\/p>\n<p>And in my way of thinking, if you believe your product can truly help people, then it&#8217;s your moral and ethical duty to at least tell them about it, yo?<\/p>\n<p>More:<\/p>\n<p>There are lessons (i.e. content) in all my emails.<\/p>\n<p>Some obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Some not-so-obvious.<\/p>\n<p>But you can find value even in my emails aggressively making the sale.
