{"id":7193,"date":"2013-05-16T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=7193"},"modified":"2013-05-16T06:00:44","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T13:00:44","slug":"why-swiping-emails-is-the-mark-of-a-loser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/why-swiping-emails-is-the-mark-of-a-loser\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Swiping Emails Is The Mark Of A Loser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Got a new policy for new website subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>And that is, whenever someone with an email address containing the word &#8220;swipe&#8221;, or &#8220;swipes&#8221; or anything related to that subscribes&#8230; I delete &#8217;em on sight.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because they&#8217;re most likely clueless.<\/p>\n<p>Probably subscribing for the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n<p>And, are obviously there to &#8220;swipe&#8221; the words in my emails, instead of learn from them.<\/p>\n<p>Look, I get it.<\/p>\n<p>I used to be a big fan of swiping, too.<\/p>\n<p>But when I started doing copywriting assignments in the really competitive markets, I discovered I could only keep relying on swipe files for as long as I could afford to lose.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, Chachi.<\/p>\n<p>But swipe files are overrated.<\/p>\n<p>And here are a few reasons why:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ad appeals that worked before may not work now<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes ads that &#8220;killed it&#8221; (supposedly) did so only because the other ads they competed against sucked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Market &#8220;awareness&#8221; often changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Market sophistication often changes (see Gene Schwartz&#8217;s &#8220;Breakthrough Advertising&#8221; book for more on &#8220;awareness&#8221; and &#8220;sophistication&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible copyright infringement\u00a0(see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.BenSettle.com\/blog\/swipe-file\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>www.BenSettle.com\/blog\/swipe-file<\/strong><\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hey, I&#8217;m not anti-swipe file.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just anti swiping the way a lot of Internet marketers do it. Swipe files are great for idea generation, inspiration and templates for headlines, opening paragraphs, bullets, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But stealing ad copy word-for-word?<\/p>\n<p>Stoopid on a stick.<\/p>\n<p>Especially with emails where it&#8217;s the mark of a loser (especially since the best emails are heavily personality-based).<\/p>\n<p>I know this email falls on lots of deaf ears.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s for those with ears to hear for selling online &#8212; not the swipers, amateurs and losers anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s talk bid&#8217;niz.<\/p>\n<p>Next &#8220;Email Players&#8217; issue includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secrets of an entrepreneur who sells $30 million of wine per year&#8230; JUST with email<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A profitable kind of email I think every single marketer should send to their list right away.
