{"id":7674,"date":"2013-10-17T06:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T13:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/?p=7674"},"modified":"2013-10-17T06:00:22","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T13:00:22","slug":"id-rather-be-water-boarded-than-listen-to-these-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bensettle.com\/blog\/id-rather-be-water-boarded-than-listen-to-these-people\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;d Rather Be Water Boarded Than Listen To These People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I once dated a girl whose friends I&#8217;d sometimes hang with.<\/p>\n<p>They were all decent people.<\/p>\n<p>And, it was fun at times.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">But, mostly, it was painfully dull<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because ALL they talked about was their jobs&#8230; gossip about their co-workers&#8230; (and about each other, when one of them wasn&#8217;t around)&#8230; and drone on about how dumb their bosses were, yada yada yada.<\/p>\n<p>I tell ya it was like nails on a chalkboard.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know about you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;d rather be water boarded than listen to people constantly complain about their boring jobs, their evil bosses and their lazy, back stabbing co-workers.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when it&#8217;s their choice to be there.<\/p>\n<p>(Viva Corporate America 2.0!)<\/p>\n<p>So yes, it was dull.<\/p>\n<p>But you know what?<\/p>\n<p>It was also extremely PROFITABLE, too.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve made many more sales as a result.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>Because I&#8217;d take mental notes.<\/p>\n<p>Catalog their biggest complaints.<\/p>\n<p>(Including the language they used, very important.)<\/p>\n<p>And, often email these notes to myself on my phone while they were in mid-rant. In fact, one time we took her friend to the airport, and it was 45 minutes of nothing but continuous workplace gossip&#8230; I couldn&#8217;t type fast enough on my phone to keep up!<\/p>\n<p>(&#8220;Ben at least TRY to join the conversation&#8230;&#8221; heh).<\/p>\n<p>Why would I do this?<\/p>\n<p>Because that&#8217;s mainstream America.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a big chunk of my market:<\/p>\n<p>People frustrated with corporate world.<\/p>\n<p>Who secretly dream of working their own deals.<\/p>\n<p>And, want out of the rat race.<\/p>\n<p>These are people I&#8217;m passionate about helping. And while, yes, it was boring to listen to, I&#8217;ve been putting that valuable marketplace intel to use in my emails ever since and seeing big results.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hey, you HAVE to hang with your market<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Observe them in their natural habitat.<\/p>\n<p>And, get cerebral and play chess with them on a deeper level than your lazy competition does.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t, you lose touch.<\/p>\n<p>Sales suffer.<\/p>\n<p>And, eventually, you go bust.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s ALL about your market.<\/p>\n<p>Know thy market better than anyone else and you can&#8217;t lose.<\/p>\n<p>More:<\/p>\n<p>This &#8220;market first&#8221; mentality was one (of many) big take aways for our recent &#8220;Oceans 4&#8221; mastermind training clients.
