Behold the persuasion power of storytelling:<\/p>\n
So I was hanging out at a local wine tasting room Sunday here in\u00a0The Burgle (my all-time favorite Oregon winery, btw, called\u00a0“TesoAria”), when I got to talking to the guy doing the pours about\u00a0the movie “Sideways”. It’s a pretty cool movie (even if you hate\u00a0wine) about a couple middle aged dudes who take a week long trip\u00a0through California’s wine country.<\/p>\n
Anyway, they are about to meet some chicks at a restaurant.<\/p>\n
But, before they go in, one of the guys says:<\/p>\n
If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Believe it or not…<\/p>\n
This ONE line in an indie movie with a $12 million budget…<\/p>\n
Killed Merlot wine sales!<\/p>\n
And I mean, just killed them.<\/p>\n
It gave Merlot a terrible stigma.<\/p>\n
Made people think it sucks.<\/p>\n
And, sales dropped everywhere.<\/p>\n
Yes, even in other states.<\/p>\n
Example:<\/p>\n
The guy at the winery I was hanging at said even in Oregon at their\u00a0winery, Merlot sales plummeted. But, when they changed the name to\u00a0something else (didn’t call it it Merlot), sales went back up.<\/p>\n
The point?<\/p>\n
There are several.<\/p>\n
Like, wine snobs are idiots and followers.<\/p>\n
Test changing your product’s name if sales die off.<\/p>\n
But, most importantly…<\/p>\n
The power of stories.<\/p>\n
Humans are “hard wired” to be persuaded by stories.<\/p>\n
And they can work either for or against you.<\/p>\n
So tread carefully…<\/p>\n
