True story:<\/p>\n
Recently, my copywriting apprentice came over to get some work done\u00a0(i.e. cook, clean, write emails, etc). It was afternoon and\u00a0she breached Castle Settle protocol\u00a0by not even showering or\u00a0combing her hair before arriving.<\/p>\n
Apparently, she thought it was casual Tuesday.<\/p>\n
(Yes, she was lectured.)<\/p>\n
Anyway, here’s why this matters to you:<\/p>\n
She was working downstairs at my kitchen table listening to\u00a0Halloween music, and I decided to take a break from editing my\u00a0newest novel “Vampire Apocalypse” and meddle in her work.<\/p>\n
My stairway is next to the kitchen.<\/p>\n
Thus, she was sitting with her back to me.<\/p>\n
And what happened was, I came down while she was listening to a\u00a0spooky organ-type piece called “The Brides” from the “Bram Stoker’s\u00a0Dracula” movie score. And as I walked down the steps, I saw her at\u00a0the table, back to me, her hair standing up and out like some\u00a0kind of ghoul<\/em>, typing on her laptop, moving her shoulders up and\u00a0down, and side by side, to the music.<\/p>\n From where I was, it didn’t look like she was typing.<\/p>\n It looked like she was playing an organ.<\/p>\n Like SHE was playing the creepy music.<\/strong><\/p>\n It amused me.<\/p>\n And, thus, lessened the severity of her punishment for breaching\u00a0Castle Settle dress code.<\/p>\n Anyway, that music was delightfully menacing.<\/p>\n What I call “horror epic.”<\/p>\n So what did I do?<\/p>\n I marched back up to my office.<\/p>\n Downloaded the piece from Amazon.<\/p>\n And resumed editing “Vampire Apocalypse” while listening to it.<\/p>\n (Kinda poetic, eh?)<\/p>\n And guess what?<\/p>\n That music had a HUGE impact on the chapter I was writing. (Chapter\u00a06 — probably the best chapter in the book). It made the chapter\u00a0FAR better than it would have been. Made it more entertaining, too.\u00a0And, dare I say, more eerie and disturbing.<\/p>\n The lesson:<\/p>\n Music impacts writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n I don’t care if you’re writing fiction. Or how-to books. Or, yes,\u00a0emails.
