And, because\u00a0I&#8217;ve been getting a crap ton of email ideas from watching (over and\u00a0over &#8212; I&#8217;m compulsive like that) it for the various markets I sell\u00a0in. Anyway, I&#8217;ve been making a list of email ideas just from the\u00a0Joker&#8217;s dialogue. One of the more valuable ones is how he tells\u00a0multiple stories about his origin, depending on who he&#8217;s talking to.<\/p>\n<p>They all begin the same:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Want to know how I got these scars?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then he goes into some loco story about how he got his &#8220;smile&#8221;\u00a0(his cheeks each are sliced down to the sides of his mouth, showing\u00a0a scarred &#8220;smile&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Each story is extreme.<\/p>\n<p>Brutally detailed.<\/p>\n<p>And, completely fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to my point, Batman:<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write emails that people love to read and buy from,\u00a0write stories that are crazy and extreme. I&#8217;m not saying to lie.\u00a0I&#8217;m just saying, the more &#8220;heaven and hell&#8221; the story is&#8230; the\u00a0more painful, humiliating, inspirational, triumphant, etc&#8230; the\u00a0more readable your emails will be, the more likely people will\u00a0click on your links, and, yes, the more they&#8217;ll be &#8220;prepped&#8221; to buy\u00a0what you&#8217;re selling.<\/p>\n<p>To paraphrase the Joker:<\/p>\n<p>Whatever doesn&#8217;t kill your emails only makes them&#8230; stranger.<\/p>\n<p>A lesson I learned the hard way, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>True story:<\/p>\n<p>Last week I had the privilege of having an ad I&#8217;m working on get\u00a0jabbed, stabbed, shot, and tied inside a room full of oil drums\u00a0rigged to explode by one of my favorite &#8220;A List&#8221; copywriters David\u00a0Deutsch.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out I was playing it WAY too safe in the headline.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to get crazier.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to (as he said):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Go hardcore Ben Settle&#8221; in the headline.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, you know what?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the same with your emails.<\/p>\n<p>Go crazy in your subject lines.<\/p>\n<p>In your offers.<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, in your stories.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t SPURN me on this.<\/p>\n<p>Do it.<\/p>\n<p>Do. it.<\/p>\n<p>If you want some story-telling guidance, then I got good news: The\u00a0January &#8220;Email Players&#8221; issue is all about storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, 7 ways to write stories that have impact.<\/p>\n<p>That can&#8217;t be forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>And, are compulsively readable.<\/p>\n<p>(And profitable.)<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.EmailPlayers.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>www.EmailPlayers.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ben Settle<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I&#8217;ve been watching Batman: The Dark Knight.
