Due to reasons I won’t bore you with, I decided she will no longer be my apprentice. (And no, I’m not looking for another one, so don’t\u00a0be a dumb ass and ask after I just said I’m not looking for one.)<\/p>\n
But, I occasionally still help her out.<\/p>\n
Sometimes give her advice.<\/p>\n
And, steer her away from the pitfalls.<\/p>\n
(And, can you believe it, she listens better now that she did when\u00a0she was my apprentice… dames…)<\/p>\n
Anyway, here’s the point:<\/p>\n
Recently, I looked at a headline she wrote.<\/p>\n
It was pretty good, too, and would get the job done.<\/p>\n
But, I knew it could be better. So, I quickly batted out a new\u00a0headline and sub-headline and emailed it back to her.<\/p>\n
Her response?<\/p>\n
“you ass. you did it again. No matter how good I think I am getting at this….\u00a0you always show me up by multipliers.”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
My retort?<\/p>\n
“You don’t have to beat me.\u00a0You just have to try and keep up…”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
And that’s the lesson my dear little fledgling:<\/p>\n
A lot of times you could be studying something written by someone\u00a0with much more experience (and talent) than you, and get\u00a0discouraged.<\/p>\n
Like maybe you’re not good enough for this business.<\/p>\n
Or that you’re inferior.<\/p>\n
Or any kind of self-defeating thinking.<\/p>\n
Don’t.<\/p>\n
Everyone starts somewhere.<\/p>\n
Even the great Gary Bencivenga (universally considered the world’s\u00a0greatest living copywriter) said he sucked out loud (not his exact\u00a0words, but you catch my drift) for the first 10 years of his career.<\/p>\n
Ten years!<\/p>\n
And that’s the best of the best.<\/p>\n
So fret not if you’re struggling at this.<\/p>\n
Work on it every day… don’t be afraid to make mistakes… and\u00a0realize that, even if you do suck, if you know your market and have\u00a0a hot, responsive list… you can write “C” (even “D”) level copy\u00a0and still make out like a bandit.<\/p>\n

But, a word of warning:<\/p>\n
She doesn’t suffer fools gladly.<\/p>\n
She’s not going to work for a percentage of your business or JV\u00a0with you or anything like that — cash only, Toots.<\/p>\n
And, she’s busy.<\/p>\n
She’s not cheap, either.<\/p>\n
(Full disclosure: I get a finders fee. But I am not apprenticing\u00a0her, so don’t hire her thinking you’re getting a package deal like\u00a0before. I will give her some advice or guidance or whatever if I’m in a generous mood, but 99% of it is her.)<\/p>\n

So send as much detail about your project as you can.<\/p>\n
